GPU bug afetr update Windows 1903 and DDU 18.0.1.4

Post by GRABibus »

Hello,
I updated my Windows 64bits 1809 to 1903 this week end.
I had 430.64 drivers installed.

After this update, concerning 430.64 drivers, it was remaining only the icon of the PhysX programs in "Add/remove programs".
No more the icon of "NVIDIA Drivers 430.64" was in "Add/remove programs".
I passed DDU 18.0.1.4 (As I always do after OS update).

This didn't delete the icon of PhysX programs in "add/remove programs"....
I could only delete the remaing REG keys of PhsyX with RevoUnistaller.

After doing this whole process (DDU and RevoUnsitaller), I got big issues : GPU seemed to switched "off" (Even when idling on desktop) and black screen.
Obliged to switch off the computer and to restart.
Then, the issur occured again...

I decided to restore my Windows just after the 1903 update but before DDU process.

Then, I decided to clean the installed drivers and remaing REG key s(Of PhysX) with RevoUnisnstaller.
And then, I reinstalled the 430.64.

Issue solved.

So, it seems that DDU process after my 1903 update broke something which created the above described issue with the GPU.

Hi,
If you have the DDU logs of theses run it could help determine if DDU was the cause of your issues.
But there are also chance it was the update itself. As you were telling, stuff in the "add/remove programs" were unusual.
I will try to find out if I can repro the Physx stuck there even after a DDU run.
Is your physx intallation the default one (that come with the driver) or you are also installing the legacy ?
Also did you check the DDU options? by default, Physx cleanup is disabled.

Hi,
Thanks for this swift reply.

I think I don't have the DDU logs, as I delete DDU folder after using it...

My Physx is coming from the driver package installation, coming from official NVIDIA website.

I didn't know that there was to tick an option so that DDU can delete PhysX...

I never took care about this option in the past when I used DDU, and PhysX was removed by DDU....

Yeah this DDU option was changed recently as some user reported it prefer it disabled because of legacy support stuff.
But hey, thanks for reporting tho.

Problem is that curently, I won't use DDU anymore until this issue be identified and solved, I hope so : )

If for example I use DDU to uninstall my current 430.64 and reinstall them or to install the future WHQL version from NVIDIA, then, issue will reappear....

I can't use DDU anymore at the moment...:(

Sorry about that.
I'm on the same OS as you and I don't experience the "black screen" issue you were referring.
Only difference maybe is I made a clean Install on my end of 1903. I did not upgrade it from 1809->1903

If you happen to try it again later, a DDU log is essential for me to fix stuff.(if there is stuff to fix of course )

Also you didn't tell me what is your GPU ?

I will try maybe again DDU when you release a new version...
I am afraid to completely scracth my system and be obliged to reinstall al Windows....
But that is really Strange.

My GPU is a Gigabyte GTX 1080Ti Gaming OC 11G flashed with Bios ASUS XOC (No power limit).
I never had this issue with 1803 and 1809.

I recommend that for the moment you don't use DDU for a few weeks and tell me if you see the issue again.
Just to be sure it's not a random bug with the driver itself with the new 1903.
I'll do some investigation on my end too.

When the bug occurred, it occurred some minutes after booting on Windows.

Yesterday evening I could play one hour gaming and let the computer idling one entire night, with no issue.

So, I assume, this is linked to DDU on my system when upgrading from 1809 to 1903.
