Display Driver and GPU problems with Microsoft Preview Update KB5077241

The laptop in question is my OMEN 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop PC 15-en1000 IDS Base Model, 2021. In all honesty, I did not realize my windows update had the option of downloading preview updates enabled. It's currently shut off now. After I installed the preview update KB5077241, my GPU and display drivers started to create critical errors. My external monitor would stop displaying information, go black, and then indicate that it is not connected. Then my main laptop screen would turn on. This problem seems to trigger when the GPU is under load, such as playing a demanding GPU and CPU game and now (recently) even when not playing a game, when I am at my desktop. Sometimes when it occurs not even my laptop screen activates. I have done the Windows 11, version 25H2 (repair version), did the DSIM/Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth and SFC /Sacnnow options in the command prompt under administrator. I am trying to update the drivers from HP Support but I have Windows 11 version 25H2 and HP support has not caught up as of yet. I think the older versions will help but I'm not sure if that will work. Please advise. Thank you.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Uninstall the KB5077241 and see if it fixes the issue. Normally it should if it's really the cause.

Wagnard, thank you for responding.

I have uninstalled it. I also ran the Fix Problems using Windows Update (3 times) and used DSIM/Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow in admin mode to also help flix the problem, including some other possible fixes but nothing has worked and blocked it from reinstalling. It seems as though the problem is deeper than at the surface. Just before receiving your response, the same preview update of KB5077241 reinstalled itself again. This is a pain in the neck.

Yeah, If you uninstalled the preview update and the problem was still there, then the issue is probably elsewhere.
Since it's a laptop, I would check the temperatures first. Then verify if the Nvidia driver was update recently and maybe roll back.

Reinstalling windows could be an option too.
Check if there is information in the "Reliability report" like a GPU driver crash or else.

I am looking at my GPU and CPU core temperatures and they are reading: CPU - steady at 105 degrees F GPU - fluctuating from 110 degrees to 114 degrees F. These temperatures are at base levels when I'm at my desktop. I am not running anything intensive such as a game. My current NVIDIA driver is number 581.83. I have refrained from downloaded the newer driver since I have seen that it contains numerous problems, which is number 591.86 When I do play a game (Normally GTA 5) GPU temp goes up to around 120 degrees and CPU temp goes up to around 140 - 145 degrees. This is still in the green zone for an Omen Gaming Laptop. I'm not too sure where the reliability report is located. Please refresh my memory.

Wait, I found it. I do not se anything about GPU errors, I see 6 entries for today's date (3/2/2026) for HP Display Control Service - Unsuccessful Application Installation. Description: Windows Installer Installed the product. Product Name: HP Control Service. Product Version: 5.3.27.0. Product Language: 1033 Manufacturer: Portrait Displays, Inc. Installation success or error status: 1603

I am curious to know where the latest version of DDU is on your site. I am going to give this a try.
