Is there a way to block GPU driver updates from Windows Update without disabling Windows Update altogether?

Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a driver removal tool that can help you completely remove AMD (ATI), NVIDIA and Intel graphics drivers.

Is there a way to block GPU driver updates from Windows Update without disabling Windows Update altogether?

Post by LauraDam »

Hi forum members,

I'm looking for a solution to prevent Windows Update from automatically updating graphics card (GPU) drivers — specifically NVIDIA, but I don't want to disable Windows Update completely, because I still need security updates and system patches.

The problem is that every time Windows automatically installs a new GPU driver, it makes my computer unstable. I'm using a very "standard" configuration for 3D graphics software and some separate plugins, so changing the driver makes everything messy and sometimes even crashes the entire workflow.

I've tried:
  • Group Policy Editor (GPEdit.msc): Turn off "Automatic driver updates," but it doesn't seem to work for the GPU.
  • Registry tweak NoDevMgrUpdate: no obvious effect yet.
  • Use Device Installation Settings to select "No" when asked to automatically install the driver – still overridden after a few days.
Does anyone know how to specifically block GPU driver updates from Windows Update?
That is, I still want to keep Windows Update for other items (security, system), but the GPU driver part is not touched unless I proactively update.

I use Windows 10 Pro (22H2). If there is a way to apply it while still ensuring long-term stability, please advise. Thank you very much!

Goal: keep the GPU driver stable to ensure work performance, but still want to update other Windows components normally.
