Chrome cookies deleted after using DDU in Safe Mode

Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a driver removal tool that can help you completely remove AMD (ATI), NVIDIA and Intel graphics drivers.

i got scared that maybe my chrome was hijacked so i reinstalled lol.

would love a good explanation
Seems to happen to some when using safemode with networking, my guess is that the system detect enough of changes to invalidate the current cookies.

Hi!

Just happened
I rebooted in safe mode with networking. (win11)
I left computer for a few minutes while DDU removed stuff. Came back to pc, it was restarted.
I installed new drivers.
Then i noticed all cookies are gone from chrome.
The cookie database file gets emptied

Just wanted to add, that I went into safe mode with networking myself, and I tried to open chrome, and then I close it.
I then reboot in normal mode ( NO DDU involved)
In normal mode I was logged out of everything.
So my conclusion it's something related to safe mode with networking and no direct link with DDU at all.

I believe you are right @Wagnard.

Sometimes, I've used the AMD Cleanup Utility first, followed by DDU (in Safe Mode & Restart). I know it's an overkill procedure. For a while, I thought DDU was deleting/invalidating the browser cookies (MS Edge, in my case), but then I discovered it was the AMD Cleanup Utility, since it uses Safe Mode with network access. When I only use DDU to uninstall the graphics driver in Safe Mode (without network access), my stored cookies always remain functional after using DDU.

Just here to say this bug is still present and report my findings.

If you change boot setting to safe mode via .bat or System Configuration - using DDU results in wipe of cookies/extensions/logins in Chrome.
It does not matter if you select Minimal boot option or the one with Internet, cookies/extensions/logins get removed the same.

If you use Recovery Menu "Shift + Reboot" and then select option 4 "Enable Safe Mode" - using DDU does NOT affect cookies/extensions/logins stay as they were.
This can also be achieved by using "shutdown /r /o /t 0" to enter recovery mode and going to Safe Mode (4) from there still preserves all cookies/extensions/logins.

So it appears that what matters is how you trigger safe mode boot, Using Recovery Menu preserves all cookies, while using any other method to boot into safe mode triggers removal.

It must really be something else. I use chrome and I always do use safe mode on my machine with DDU (With the safe mode DDU option bring) and I never got that problem.

After a problematic cleanup, on your end verify in the DDU logs if you encounter anything chrome related that was remove. I think you will not find anything.
If DDU remove cookies, it will be written on it's logs. If we cant find it then something else removed them or invalidated them.

I am not implying that DDU doing/removing something - absolutely not, I think its Chrome detecting some changes in drivers or boot setting change to safe mode and wiping itself for security.
It's just weird it only happens when Boot Option is changed by default and not when recovery mode is used to boot into safemode once.

Ok sorry,
Have you tried to manually launch chrome in both state and see if the result is different ?

No, but I will try testing that when there is next NVIDIA Driver out...

I usually used to set "Minimal" safe boot with "System Configuration" and reboot to safemode, Once in safemode set boot back to normal and use DDU to wipe driver and restart back to normal windows.
Now when I found that using Recovery mode and selecting Option 4 to boot into safemode keeps my chrome unchanged, I use that. (because redownloading all extensions is a chore)

I think its worth to note that I have been using DDU for many years and only this year Chrome started acting weird.
Currently I am on fresh OS install and it removed cookies again after safemode + DDU, so its not some other soft in windows as I am on debloated barebone version of Win11 25H2.

I will try to not forget and test safeboot with network + open chrome from safemode to see if it self wipes again.

No need to wait for a new Nvidia driver for simply going into safe mode and starting chrome. Since DDU is not involved anywhere here.
