I imagine a straightforward removal won't work.

Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a driver removal tool that can help you completely remove AMD (ATI), NVIDIA and Intel graphics drivers.

Hi there! I use NVIDIA, and my new AMD graphics card is coming home today. Since incomplete uninstallation of prior drivers has been reported to cause problems, I would want to know: How can I be positive that all traces of my prior NVIDIA drivers have been removed from the planet? I imagine a straightforward removal won't work.

That's why DDU was made for. To be sure that everything is gone (or at least 99%+)
