Chrome cookies deleted after using DDU in Safe Mode

Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a driver removal tool that can help you completely remove AMD (ATI), NVIDIA and Intel graphics drivers.

checksumerror wrote: Tue Feb 25, 2025 5:29 am I had the same thing with Edge (using the chrome engine). I went into safe mode, performed the clear and my cookies were gone after this. While DDU may not be doing this, I noticed during the output it reports using an API to "do stuff", could that API have been updated to clear / wipe cookies?
The SetupAPI you probably saw is what remove the devices from device manager.
Something that could help is checking if the cookies are there .
Chrome
C:\Users\Your_User_Name\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Network

Edge (not verified)
C:\Users\Your_User_Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Network

If they are there after a DDU cleanup , well, it's clear that hey were not removed. Maybe they can get invalidated because of too much system change, but that I'm no expert of this.

But I'll say that to eliminate DDU completly as the cause, we must know (cookies files) if they are still there.

Hi!

I have experienced the same thing a couple of months ago when I used DDU (safe mode) for my 5080FE. I did not link this to DDU at first and just logged into every website (on both chrome and edge). I upgraded to a 5090FE last week and ran DDU and all my cookies were cleared again, hence suspecting DDU and landing on this thread. Chromium browsers typically do not clear cookies after a hardware change so it might be something else (combination of DDU and something in safe mode?). I did check out most of the log entries to find anything browser related and was left with only the entries with a CLID. All the rest looked fine. My knowledge does not go deep enough to check all those out =(. So maybe some entry that gets deleted is something the browsers do not like.

Anyway, it's not that big of a deal to me and still love DDU :D

I just had this happen myself and already sent in my logs. I use Edge and my cookies were wiped for most websites as well. I had to log into Google and all sites that use Google, Netflix, tweakers.net (Dutch tech platform), Battle.net, Reddit, ChatGPT, Amazon Prime Video, Floatplane, Twitch and probably other sites I haven't checked yet.

One thing I did notice is that if I used a QR code to sign in (such as on Discord or on WhatsApp Web) or an API key (like deck.blue), it did not sign me out. I also noticed it only signed me out of my default Edge cookies. I was not signed out of any websites on my secondary Edge profile. I also do not appear to be signed out of any websites on my second Windows account I use for work and wasn't involved in any driver deletion today.

One thing I am speculating about: I believe the Nvidia App and Geforce Experience clients are based on Chromium as well. Is it in theory possible that uninstalling these using DDU in safe mode might be messing with cookies in other browsers?

After my gpu crashes 3 month's ago, I finally got my hands on a new one.

Besides that I've got an update on this topic I started.

1. I have reproduced the same problem (deleting cookies Chrome) when using DDU in safe mode.
2. The only way to prevent this is to run the safe mode in mode 4, which is the one without internet connection.
3. I did try this just now and all my cookies are still there.
4. Apparently there's something got to do with the internet connection, so I choose for the first safe mode and not one of the others.

P.S. I don't know if that's exactly the case for everyone, but for me I finally found the solution that worked for me. So I thought, let's share it immediately, cause I opened this topic and still had encounters with the same problem. But now that's over.

Thnx Wagnard for all your hard work. I use this app every time there's a new driver.

I've switched from nVidia to AMD now, and also use it to completely delete all the AMD GPU drivers.

There's 1 real benefit for me using DDU over the cleanup tool from AMD which is integrated in their software now, that's that after using DDU my HDR calibration for my screen has still its settings.

Keep up the good work, and again thank you very much! 8-)

Thanks for that update, some nice information here as on my side I always do safe mode without the internet connection. Ill try with it and see if anything different.

Glad you were able to find a workaround that work for you. I'll keep posting in this thread my findings if any.
